The location of INI files differs between different versions of Windows operating systems. INI files are stored on the computer in the same location as other operating system files. Typically user-oriented operating systems (Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows ME, possibly Windows XP Home Edition) normally store operating system files in c:\windows. Most business-oriented operating systems (Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional) store operating system files in c:\winnt. The name of the directory where the operating system is stored can also be overridden at the time when the operating system is installed on the computer. Also, it can differ based on whether the computer was installed newly with its current operating system or upgraded from an older operating system.
